In a major decision, the Supreme Court of India has imposed a ₹2,00,000 fine on the Uttarakhand State Election Commission.

The apex court took strict action after it was found that the commission failed to cancel nominations of candidates in the panchayat elections whose names appeared in two or more voter lists.

This action by the State Election Commission went against the direct orders of the Uttarakhand High Court, which had clearly instructed that such nominations must be rejected as per election rules. Despite the directions, the commission ignored the rules, leading to today’s penalty.
