6 fastings of shawwal

Fasting six days in the Islamic month of Shawwal, following Ramadan, is a highly recommended (Sunnah) act, often resulting in the reward of a full year’s fasting. By combining 30 days of Ramadan with 6 days of Shawwal, the 10x reward multiplier for deeds equals 360 days—a full year. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Key Details of Shawwal Fasting:

  • The Reward: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever fasts Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted for an entire year” (Sahih Muslim 1164).
  • When to Fast: The fasts can be observed anytime during Shawwal, though it is prohibited on the first day (Eid al-Fitr).
  • Consecutive or Separate: While some scholars recommend fasting consecutively immediately after Eid, others permit separating the days throughout the month.
  • Significance: It serves to maintain the spiritual momentum built in Ramadan, acts as a gratitude to Allah, and makes up for any deficiencies in the obligatory Ramadan fasts. [1, 5, 6, 7]

It is important to note that one should prioritize making up any missed days of Ramadan before observing the voluntary Shawwal fasts, if necessary. [2, 4]
